Carl Peterson: Stephen Ross Never Offered Jim Harbaugh Coaching Job

by Brian Biggane

Former Kansas City Chiefs General Manager Carl Peterson Friday backed up the assertion Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross made last month that he never offered the Miami coaching job to Jim Harbaugh and insisted that Ross has for the most part remained out of the team’s football operations.

Speaking to ESPN-760AM radio host Evan Cohen on Radio Row in Dallas, Peterson, a close friend and business associate of Ross, said it was he who introduced Ross and Harbaugh when Harbaugh brought his Stanford team to the Orange Bowl game at Sun Life Stadium in early January.

“I know Jim very, very well,” Peterson said. “I know his father, his brother. But I wasn’t on the plane (when Ross visited Harbaugh in California). I wasn’t even in the country.”

Peterson expressed frustration with the media, members of which jumped the gun and reported Ross and Harbaugh had a deal bringing him to Miami.

“I don’t respect a lot of people who try to be first rather than accurate,” he said. “I wish people I thought were friends would get on the phone and ask me, ‘Carl, is there any truth to this?’”

Peterson, who currently is working with Ross in marketing handheld video players being used inside stadiums, called Ross “an entrepreneurial guy” who is “bright as can be. He’s done some wonderful things for the Dolphins.”

Peterson objected when asked if Ross, after having a mostly hands-off policy in his team football operations since buying a majority interest of the Dolphins in January 2009, might be doing a bit more meddling of late.

“I don’t think he’s interfering at all,” he said. “He’s a very concerned and bright owner who’s trying to do the right things. He’s not involved in making football decisions. He hired another guy (Bill Parcells) who is no longer there, Jeff Ireland is doing an outstanding job as general manager, Tony Sparano same thing. You have to have something called patience in NFL.”

Peterson ended the interview insisting once again that Ross, whom he repeatedly referred to as “my friend,” never offered Harbaugh a job.

“My friend had an interest in Jim Harbaugh because they’re both Michigan guys,” he said. “Jim Harbaugh is a very talented young coach coming into the NFL. But the thing (Ross) was surprised about was the media attention.”
