A decade ago, Good Karma Broadcasting created an all-sports radio station in West Palm Beach, a market with no such station.
The same opportunity has come around again. This time, in Spanish.
On Tuesday, ESPN 760 AM began carrying 24 hours of ESPN Deportes Radio, bringing Spanish-language sports radio to the West Palm Beach area. The new station is called ESPN Deportes 760.
Good Karma, which put ESPN 760 on the air in 2003, bought 106.3 FM in August 2012. Since its February launch, 106.3 had run the same content as 760.
Going forward, 106.3 will carry local sports programming such as high school football games and Evan Cohen’s drive-time show, as well as national ESPN Radio programs.
ESPN Deportes has a heavy focus on international soccer and Major League Baseball, and also broadcasts “Monday Night Football,” the NBA and boxing.
“Hispanic sports fans have been underserved in the Palm Beaches and the Treasure Coast,” said Steve Politziner, the general manager of the stations. “The content ESPN Deportes offers, we feel, really serves the community here.”
WJNX 1330 AM in Fort Pierce began broadcasting ESPN Deportes Radio in 2005, when ESPN launched the service. It carries ESPN Deportes from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. and local Spanish programming at other times.
In 2011, Miami-based WNMA 1210 AM became a 24-hour ESPN Deportes station.
However, neither station’s signal is strong in West Palm Beach. WJNX owner Greg Wyatt said he is pleased 760 will fill the gap.
“It’s great,” he said. “Basically from Melbourne all the way to Miami, you can hear ESPN Deportes now.”
