Spring practice is wrapping up across Florida, so college coaches are making the most of their remaining time to check out some of the top prospects in action. Here's some of the latest news from Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.
-Dwyer linebacker/safety Shawn Boone's recruitment continues to heat up. This past week, the hard-hitting junior reeled in offers from BCS programs such as Arkansas, Mississippi State, Rutgers and Syracuse. Boone has over scholarship offers at this point.
-Further north, Martin County DB Nate Simmons is picking up plenty of looks as well. USF, Duke and Eastern Kentucky have all been showing interest in the rising senior. Martin County head coach Chuck Kenyon says Simmons could play on offensive or defense in college, depending on potential schools' needs. Simmons' older brother Justin is a safety at Boston College.
-Speaking of versatile Martin County players, Scott Husnander is another intriguing prospect. The 6-1, 245 lb. rising junior plays on the offensive line for the Tigers, but Kenyon says he could play fullback at the next level. Husnander, also a baseball standout, has great athleticism for his size, finishing the year second on the team in stolen bases.
-St. Andrew's 2015 tight end Jake Bargas continues to see his recruitment heat up. Florida is the latest to check up on the 6-4, 225 lb. sophomore, with assistant coach Joker Phillips dropping by SA this past week. Miami stopped by the previous week to talk to Bargas. Currently, Bargas is committed to play lacrosse at the University of Michigan.
-Two years after sending its first player to a BCS school (Devonte Robinson at West Virginia), Village Academy could be on the verge of sending two more players to BCS level schools. Defensive tackle Kevin Bronson and wide receiver Tre'Quan Smith have been getting tons of looks this season and should see their recruitment heat up as the year progresses. UCF could be a major player for the duo. The school was out at practice this past week to check out Bronson and Smith.

Martin County Tigers
2012 Record: 5-7 (Lost to Ft. Pierce Central in 7A Regional Semifinals)
Top Returners:
DB/WR Nate Simmons (Sr): Hard-hitting safety already picking up interest from Division 1 schools like USF, Duke and Eastern Kentucky. Simmons is one of the top defensive playmakers in the Treasure Coast.
RB Dan Fillhaber (Jr.): Ran for 975 yards and 14 touchdowns as a sophomore while splitting time with Jermohn Queen. The rising junior has already accepted an invitation to the 2014 All-American combine.
LB Nick Borowick (Sr.) Head coach Chuck Kenyon says he plans on using Borowick at linebacker, running back and slot receiver in the fall. In addition, he’s even playing quarterback in the spring. Borowick could provide the Tigers with a Wildcat element to the offense in the fall.
Key Losses:
RB Jermohn Queen, OL Brandon Simpson, OL JacQuan Davis
In their words: “He’d rather run you over than run past you.” –Martin County head coach Chuck Kenyon on Borowick carrying the ball.
Spring Game: (5/24) @ Rockledge
Duse’s Take: After making the Regional Semifinals in 2011, most expected the Tigers to have a down year after graduating a majority of their starting line-up. While Martin County finished under .500 in the regular season, they won a Three-Way District tiebreaker to make the postseason, and then subsequently upset Charlotte to make it to the Regional Semifinals for a second consecutive season.
This year Martin County returns a veteran group with 17 starters returning from a year ago. The Tigers also switch districts in 2013 and will avoid Ft. Pierce Central, who’s been a thorn in their side, eliminating them the past two years in the postseason. With a talented group returning and a more favorable district, Martin County could be in store for a big 2013.

Seminole Ridge Hawks
2012 Record: 8-3 (Lost to Cypress Bay 34-14 in 8A Regional Finals)
Top Returners:
RB E.J. Elien (Sr.) Ran for 805 yards and 1 TD as a junior. Could be in for a big senior year with Ridge having to replace last year’s leading rusher in Silas Spearman.
C Troy Artilius (Sr.) Rising senior will anchor the Hawks offensive line.
WR Pernal Rattray (Sr.) Led the team in receiving out wide with 16 catches for 185 yards and 1 TD.
Key Losses:
DT Kyle Shortridge (Louisville)
LB Rayfield Dixon (Minnesota)
RB Silas Spearman (FIU)
In their words: “I live two minutes from the school, so for me – for eight years I drove by this high school on the way down to Hollywood Hills for eight years up and back. Like I told my wife and our principal, ‘I was in a car for three hours a day and I did pretty good down there. I wonder what I could do being two minutes in a car everyday.’ I’m pretty excited about the opportunity and I think we’re going to do pretty well this year. –Scott Barnwell on taking over the head coaching position.
Spring Game: (5/24) vs. South Fork
Duse’s Take: After having consistency at the head coaching position for the past eight years with Matt Dickmann, the Ridge program has been in sudden flux as of late. Dickmann, who served as head coach since the program was founded in 2005, resigned in December to take a coaching position in Georgia. Seminole Ridge hired Steven Humphrey to replace him, but then he resigned after three months due to personal reasons.
Now, it’s former assistant Scott Barnwell who takes the reigns atop the Ridge program. While there’s been plenty of turnover around the program in the past few months, Barnwell brings a much needed steady-presence having served on staff last year. In addition, he has head coaching experience as he ran the Hollywood Hills program from 2006-2011.
While Ridge has to replace a ton of senior talent, including 5 FBS signees, Dickmann did a great job establishing a program that’s able to consistently replace key departures. Even though Dickmann’s off coaching in Georgia, Barnwell spent a year under the former head coach and understands how the program runs. The team still has plenty of skilled players returning and should once again be in position to defend its District Title.

JUPITER, Fla. -- For the past 50 years, not one of Jupiter's baseball teams has advanced to the state tournament.
That all changes on Friday when the Warriors take on Lake Brantley in Ft. Myers in the state semifinals.
So after five decades of Jupiter falling short of states, why is this the team to finally get over the hump?
Watch Emerson's report attached to this story to hear from coach Mook and his players.
