ESPN West Palm's "coach", Chris Kokell, gives a comprehesive film breakdown of high school football prospects across Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.
Position: Linebacker/Running Back
School: Royal Palm Beach (Class of 2015)
Top 5 Offers: Miami, Alabama, Auburn, Minnesota, Illinois
Note: Committed to Miami as a junior.
Where He Excels:
Charles Perry moves very well. Very athletic for a linebacker of his size. Great at scraping down the line and playing from sideline to sideline. Stellar at reading plays to avoid blocking schemes. Shoots gaps to make plays in the back field. Uses his running back speed when blitzing which allows him to shoot through the line and pressure the quarterback. On offense, Perry is a north-south runner that doesn’t waste movement dancing. Uses his speed to hit the hole as soon as it opens up. Look up and he’s gone.
What To Work On:
While he is a sure tackler, Perry doesn’t lay the punishing hits of other linebackers. Would like to see him use his body more and not wrestle ball carriers down with his arms. Need to see more of him not rushing the passer against the pass in both man and zone. Not much film showing him using his hips to drop into coverage. On offense, Perry stands a little tall while carrying the ball. Lowering his pad level will lessen opponents’ targets while tackling him.
Kokell's Film Analysis:
Perry’s game is a complete contradiction. On offense, he explodes out of the backfield. On defense, he uses that same speed to spend most of his night in the backfield. Should do really well playing linebacker at the next level. The added size and strength he will put on in college will make him more explosive and I don’t see that top-end speed going anywhere any time soon. Perry is a top 3 linebacker and a top 5 running back in the Palm Beaches and the Treasure Coast. This rare combination puts him in the conversation with the area’s top overall players.
