#FilmRoom1063: Taking a look at American Heritage DB Desmond Cain

May 29, 2014 -- 3:10pm
ESPN West Palm's "coach", Chris Kokell, gives a comprehesive film breakdown of high school football prospects across Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.

Where He Excels:
Do you have an hour or two? I could go on and on about the play of Desmond Cain on both sides of the ball. Offensively, he can play in the backfield, where he runs tough, or at wide receiver. I prefer his game split out wide. Cain runs great routes, starting with his stem. This forces defensive backs to turn and open up their hips at which point Cain is in control of the play and owns them. Cain extends his arms and keeps the ball off his body using his above average hands. This helps Cain on defense too, where he is an interception machine. Cain’s ability to play man coverage is so impressive. I love the way he gets hip-to-hip with receivers and reads them to time out the incoming pass. He uses his high football IQ and does a great job in zone coverage at safety. Cain has above average agility and field vision which allows him to dominate a play both before and after he intercepts a pass.

What To Work On:
Desmond Cain’s on field game is pretty complete. Would like to see Cain breaking down and tackling more rather than always going for the big hit. At the next level, he will face some big receivers and backs that he won’t be able to just knock down. Cain will need to use technique to be able to become a force in both the run and the pass game. This offseason should be spent working on top-end speed. Cain plays the game smart and focuses on the fundamentals which makes his game speed fast. If he got his straight ahead speed to match it his stock would go even higher.

Kokell's Film Analysis:
As talent evaluators, we often get so locked in on players that are dynamic in one phase of the game. Cain is able to do it all. I’m not sure if he is Top 3 on either side of the ball but I would be wrong to leave him out of the discussion for the best overall football player in the Palm Beaches and the Treasure Coast. Cain is the rare player that could be a successful division one player on either side of the ball. His film reminds me so much of Antonio Fenelus (Boca High alum that was All-Big 10 at Wisconsin and is now playing for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the CFL). This leads me to project him playing defensive back and dominating on Saturdays.
