#FilmRoom1063: Taking a look at Boynton Beach RB Chauncey Mason

Jun 16, 2014 -- 11:06am

ESPN West Palm's "coach", Chris Kokell, gives a comprehesive film breakdown of high school football prospects across Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.

CHAUNCEY MASON

Position: Running Back
School: Boynton Beach (Class of 2015)
Height: 5-11
Weight: 183
Top Offers: Alcorn State, Syracuse
Note: Brother of St. Louis Rams RB Tre Mason. Spent first three seasons at Park Vista.

LISTEN: Chauncey Mason chats with our High School Hysteria crew (AUDIO)

Where He Excels:
Chauncey Mason is a dual threat RB. Great hands for a running back. Mason is very comfortable out of the backfield but is also very effective when motioned into the slot. Great hands. Above average field vision allows Mason to find running lanes that other might not see. Very athletic and good in space. North-South runner that doesn’t waste movement. Ball security should not be an issue as he always keeps it high and tight.

What To Work On:
Blocking. If Chauncey Mason learns to love blocking the way he loves scoring touchdowns he will be a complete back.  Should stress this through drills and live action when camp opens in August. This can also be worked on during summer using blocking shields. These reps will allow Mason to get the proper footwork down and make blocking instinctual. Also, think he needs to run the ball between the tackles more. Mason hasn't learned to do that yet because he is faster and more athletic than his competition, but at next level he will need to develop this and he has the ability to do so. This would assure college coaches that Mason can be an every down back.

Kokell's Film Analysis:
The minute Chauncey Mason joined forces with Lamar Jackson and Donte Sylencieux at Boynton Beach I knew I had to take a closer look at his film. Mason was even better than advertised. I think he is a definite high level Divison 1 prospect.  Mason’s ability to run routes and catch the ball, combined with his tough running style, make him a dangerous weapon that is tough to scheme against. Although he doesn't run between tackles much, he still runs the ball very strong. Mason can learn to translate that into being a powerful and violent runner who punishes tacklers. Once blocking improves, Mason can become the most complete back in the area. Love his running style as he makes people miss without dancing too much. It’s a cut and up field we go with Mason. Boynton Beach’s newly formed Big 3 should give head coach Rick Swain the final season farewell he deserves.
