ESPN West Palm's "coach", Chris Kokell, gives a comprehesive film breakdown of high school football prospects across Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.
Position: Wide Receiver
School: Lake Worth (Class of 2015)
Top Offers: Akron, FAU, Illinois, Western Kentucky
Note: Led Lake Worth in receiving yards, catches and touchdowns as a junior.
Where He Excels:
James Jones is a huge target. Uses his grown man body to shield the ball from the defender. Great jump ball option on the goal. Uses not only his 6’3” height but also leaps and catches the ball at its highest point. Outstanding body control when in the air. Plus hands. Jones does a very good job of catching the ball away from his body. Willing to run routes over the middle. Shows heart. Always fighting for extra yards after the catch. Will do all he can to get into the end zone. Solid blocker with a nasty streak. Jones seems to enjoying punishing opposing defensive backs in the run game.
What To Work On:
Needs to polish up his route running. Work on the ladders will help him here by developing quicker feet to get in and out of routes. This will allow him to run routes with a double move. Not overly fast but doesn’t need to be with his size. That being said I would still focus on top speed training once the season is over. That little bit of extra speed would really help separate Jones.
Kokell’s Film Analysis:
Good luck to opposing defensive backs when it comes to keeping up with the Jones’. James Jones is a matchup nightmare. He is too big for corners to cover out wide and too fast for linebackers. I see him being a big time possession receiver at the next level that is only going to improve. If he puts on a lot of muscle in a college weight room, expect Jones to be dominant in a role as a Y receiver lining up at TE or slot like an Antonio Gates. If I was starting a fantasy draft of players in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast, James Jones has to be in consideration for a top pick.
