#FilmRoom1063: Wellington WR Ahmmon Richards

Aug 21, 2014 -- 11:01pm

ESPN West Palm's "coach", Chris Kokell, gives a comprehesive film breakdown of high school football prospects across Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.

Position: Wide Receiver
School: Wellington (Class of 2016)
Height: 6-1
Weight: 170
Top 5 Offer: Georgia, Louisville, Miami, Tennessee, West Virginia
Note: Runs a 4.6 40-yard dash and a 4.8 shuttle. Can squat 260 lbs.

Where He Excels:
"Dynamic" and "explosive" are the first two words that come to mind when watching Ahmmon Richards play. He has great change of speed and direction. Richards’ play-making ability and vision once the ball is in his hands makes him great in space. He seems to be a step ahead of defenders when it comes to finding open running lanes or making cuts to get away from tacklers. Richards uses his height and jumping ability to get the ball at its highest point. This, coupled with his above average hands and arm extension when catching the ball makes him a nightmare match-up for opposing defensive backs.

What To Work On:
Ahmmon Richards is on the scene, now its time to get to work and clean up his game so that he can become truly elite. Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals. Athleticism will get you noticed, playing the game the right way will make you successful. If Richards wants to be number one on the ESPN Top 63 list in two years then he needs to work on technique. Cleaning up his route running and putting the ball away while in traffic should be priority number one.  While his vision is above par, Richards dances too much at times. Needs to go more North/South rather than East/West. This is normal for younger players, and with experience, he should see the value of picking up the yards that are there to be had.

Kokell's Film Analysis:
Coaching in South Florida has made me a little numb to the "shifty slot receiver with explosive speed" that draws college coaches from across the nation to the Palm Beaches and the Treasure Coast. Ahmmon Richards is in that mold, only he has the speed, the moves, and he is 6’2" with a 37-inch vertical. Such a rare combination of size, speed and athleticism does not come around often. If Ahmmon matches his raw ability with an unparalleled work ethic then the sky is the limit. The potential for greatness is there, now it is on him to achieve it.
