Park Vista Cobras

2012 Record: 8-2 (Lost to Seminole Ridge 35-31 in 8A Regional Quarterfinals)

Top returners
QB Qwad Martin (Sr.) - Potent dual-threat signal caller now in 3rd year as a starter, led team in passing, rushing last season.

S Marques Gayot (Sr.) - Physically imposing defender, major Division 1 prospect. Has given verbal commitment to Louisville.

LT Matt Matulis (Jr.) - 2nd year anchoring offensive line, brother of South Carolina lineman Mike Matulis.

In Their Words: “That's been the talk of the offseason. It's not just talk with people around the community, it's within our football team. We've been disappointed and we have to take the next step.” -Head coach Brian Dodds on back-to-back first round playoff exits

Spring Game: (5/24) at Atlantic, 7:00p

KLV's Take: The Cobras are all grown up. Two years ago it was upstart sophomore Qwad Martin playing the role of “young”. Last year, it was an infant offensive line taking the “young” moniker. In 2013, the Cobras appear poised to make a major push behind an experienced roster. Late season struggles from the defense last fall made life difficult for Vista and led to their postseason loss to Seminole Ridge. While Atlantic graduated a ton of talent, they always have speed and will be a nice test to see if Park Vista's D can hang. The Cobras have heavy expectations and they're spring performance will be worth paying attention to.

Dwyer Panthers

2012 Record: 9-3 (Lost to Boyd Anderson 6-3 in 7A regional semifinals)

Top returners:
WR Johnnie Dixon (Sr.) - Strong, speedy, explosive. Dixon is the centerpiece of perhaps the region's most prolific WR trio (Ezra Saffold, Clint Stephens). Holds numerious major D1 offers including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Florida State and Miami.

RB Alonso Smith (Sr.) - One of the area's hidden gems. Strong runner, consistent contributor overshadowed by pletheroa of big names at Dwyer. Outstanding compliment to potentially prolific passing attack.

DT/DE Mark Kelly (Sr.) - Decent size, extremely athletic defensive lineman. Will be tabbed to make up for graduation of Tennessee-bound pass-rusher Malik Brown.

Key losses:
DE Malik Brown (Tennessee), DE Ted Taylor (Dodge County (KS) Community College), CB Jonathan Moxey (Boise State)

In their words: "For our offense, it's been finding ways to get those three [wide receivers] the football. If those three guys don't get 5-10 touches every Friday night then we didn't do doing a good job, and we didn't do a good job last year." -Head coach Jack Daniels on his spring objective for the offense

Spring Game: 5/23 at Vero Beach, 7:00p

KLV's Take: Quarterback questions plagued a super-talented Dwyer team last year. Superior on defense, inferior on offense, the Panthers fizzled out in an ugly playoff loss to Boyd-Anderson. With junior Daniel Parr slated to be the man under center in 2013, Dwyer has a chance to build a dangerous passing onslaught with the deepest receiving corps in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast. Dwyer lost a lot along the defensive line and in the secondary, but head coach Jack Daniels always seems to recycle overwhelmingly powerful defenders at all positions. The Panther's spring game showdown with a loaded Vero Beach team will show Daniels much about how much better his offense can be and if his defense has maintained it's ferocity through graduation.

Duse Report: Recruiting news and notes from spring practice

Spring practice is wrapping up across Florida, so college coaches are making the most of their remaining time to check out some of the top prospects in action. Here's some of the latest news from Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.

-Dwyer linebacker/safety Shawn Boone's recruitment continues to heat up. This past week, the hard-hitting junior reeled in offers from BCS programs such as Arkansas, Mississippi State, Rutgers and Syracuse. Boone has over scholarship offers at this point.

-Further north, Martin County DB Nate Simmons is picking up plenty of looks as well. USF, Duke and Eastern Kentucky have all been showing interest in the rising senior. Martin County head coach Chuck Kenyon says Simmons could play on offensive or defense in college, depending on potential schools' needs. Simmons' older brother Justin is a safety at Boston College.

-Speaking of versatile Martin County players, Scott Husnander is another intriguing prospect. The 6-1, 245 lb. rising junior plays on the offensive line for the Tigers, but Kenyon says he could play fullback at the next level. Husnander, also a baseball standout, has great athleticism for his size, finishing the year second on the team in stolen bases.

-St. Andrew's 2015 tight end Jake Bargas continues to see his recruitment heat up. Florida is the latest to check up on the 6-4, 225 lb. sophomore, with assistant coach Joker Phillips dropping by SA this past week. Miami stopped by the previous week to talk to Bargas. Currently, Bargas is committed to play lacrosse at the University of Michigan.

-Two years after sending its first player to a BCS school (Devonte Robinson at West Virginia), Village Academy could be on the verge of sending two more players to BCS level schools. Defensive tackle Kevin Bronson and wide receiver Tre'Quan Smith have been getting tons of looks this season and should see their recruitment heat up as the year progresses. UCF could be a major player for the duo. The school was out at practice this past week to check out Bronson and Smith.
